Saudi family sues genie, alleges harassment
July 13, 2009

(CNN) -- A family in Saudi Arabia has taken a genie to court, alleging theft and harassment, according to local media.

The lawsuit filed in Shariah court accuses the genie of leaving them threatening voicemails, stealing their cell phones and hurling rocks at them when they leave their house at night, said Al-Watan newspaper.

An investigation was under way, local court officials said.

"We have to verify the truthfulness of this case despite the difficulty of doing so," Sheikh Amr Al Salmi, the head of the court, told Al-Watan. "What makes this case and complaint more interesting is that it wasn't filed by just one person. Every member of the family is part of this case."

The family, which has lived in the same house near the holy city of Medina for 15 years, said it became aware of the spirit in the past two years.

"We began hearing strange noises," the head of the family, who requested anonymity, told Al-Watan. "In the beginning, we didn't take it seriously, but after that, stranger things started happening and the children got really scared when the genie began throwing stones."

A local charity has moved the family to a temporary residence while a court investigates, the newspaper said.

In Islamic cultures, a belief in genies, or jinns, is common.

Genies not only appear in pre-Islamic fiction such as "Arabian Nights," but are also mentioned in the Quran.

Many Saudis believe invisible genies live among them and are capable of demonic possession and revenge.

Hi there! This month is a light one for steamy wares at Sihaya Designs, as I instead have been diligently working on a series of intent necklaces using oils, herbs, and botanicals. Nevertheless, I have one necklace to offer you-- The TimeKeeper's Daughter: The Way Home II.

The Timekeeper's Daughter-- The Way Home II

Every so often she would wear his key about her neck; the worn brass bore the marks of her fingerprints and the warmth of her skin. Acquaintances reckoned it odd and speculated in the salons-- what could it be? An inheritance? The key to an attic filled with riches? A relic? Such an odd girl, but so pretty-- cheeks like roses and eyes that gleamed topaz like jewels.

In truth, the key was more fantastical than anyone could ever suspect. The life of a Timekeeper is not easy. She wore the key for one simple reason-- so that no matter where she was in time or place, she could find her way home.

____________

This necklace features an antiqued brass key hung with a curio bottle, a tiny key, brass findings, and fire-polished glass rounds. It measures 20."

Warmly,
Christina

DEAR AMY: My question has to do with allegiance.

A woman I know mistreated me by gossiping about me and manipulating me.

For example, when we were getting along better, I invited her to a party I was hosting. She then brought three extra people without asking, saying that she couldn't help it because they had dropped by her house as she was leaving!

I didn't believe her excuse for a minute.

I lost all trust and respect for her.

Now I have nothing to do with this person.

But what do you think about a good friend of mine who knows very well how this woman has treated me but continues to be friends with her?

It hurts my feelings.

If someone mistreats one of my friends, I back off from that person and am loyal to my friend.

Please let me know what you think about this. -- Betrayed in Missouri

"you're lovely, but you're empty," he went on. "one couldn't die for you. of course an ordinary passerby would think my rose looked just like you. but my rose, all on her own, is more important than you altogether, since she's the one i've watered. since she's the one i put under glass. since she's the one i sheltered behind a screen. since she's the one for whom i killed the caterpillars (except for two or three for butterflies). since's she the one i listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. since she's my rose."

"that is the hardest thing of all. it is much harder to judge yourself than to judge others. if you succeed in judging yourself, it's because you're truly a wise man."

"With so many trees in the city, you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. This was the only truly sad time in Paris because it was unnatural. You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason."

Reader Nakul writes in with a useful script that quickly pastes content from the clipboard into any application with nothing more than a double-click of your right mouse button.

Using the script is easy enough—just double-click the right mouse button anywhere that you want to paste, and the script will simulate the Ctrl+V shortcut, so this should even work when you are pasting something other than just text.

To create this function for yourself, simply make a new AutoHotkey script, or add the following to your existing one:

;Double Right Click to paste
~RButton::
If (A_PriorHotKey = A_ThisHotKey and A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < 500)
{
Sleep 200 ; wait for right-click menu, fine tune for your PC
  Send {Esc} ; close it
Send ^v ; or your double-right-click action here
}
Return

Thanks, Nakul!

Ok this is not realy steampunk, more dieselpunk perhaps certain folk would say.
I thought I would post it none the less.

It's a piece I am working on for a contest. I wanted to create somthing envoked by the likes of Rocketeer. This is the result. She used to have a jet pack but I ditched it as it was messing the comp up.

This is my first post, and so I feel mildly ridiculous even asking all you strangers out there. But whats the worst that can happen, right?
Right.
So. I am new to the steampunk thing, and sorting out my outfit. As many of the victorian/edwardian fashion needed waiflike figures, Im pretty SOL. Im not big, but am certainly not boy like in my build. I LOVE corsets, and have several. However, they are all mideval in style, and Im not sure how to convert them to Steamyness. While in the mall the other day, I fell in love with this, sorta.
Now, as a rule, I dislike Fredricks corsets. They arent super quality, but the LARP Im jumping into is only a couple of sessions. And it comes in NEON yellow and green.
Is something wrong with me for wanting to work this in to a costume? Do you guys think I could make it work somehow? Im thinking black riding pants or bloomeresque pants, knee high combat boots, and, uh, some other stuff. Likely going for a slightly haughty librarian/academic look.

please, dont judge me! :)

Input for the newbie welcome, seriously.

"Just do your duty in silence. When in doubt, when flat on your back, you can look at the ceiling. Who knows what you may see up there? Funeral wreaths and angels, constellations of dust, stellar or otherwise, the puzzles left by spiders. There's always something to occupy the inquiring mind."

"the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat."

"[the writer] must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid: and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart, the universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed—love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice."

-- william faulkner, nobel prize speech.

"The light shines into the act of life for only the briefest moment - perhaps only a matter of seconds. Once it is gone and one has failed to grasp its offered revelation, there is no second chance. One may have to live the rest of one's life in hopeless depths of loneliness and remorse. In that twilight world, one can no longer look forward to anything. All that such a person holds in his hands is the withered corpse of what should have been".

The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
